The Canadian bet is great for both beginners and advanced punters. It has five selections and combines doubles, trebles, fourfold accumulators and a single fivefold accumulator.

So you have 26 separate bets that are within a Canadian bet, and the great thing is that it gives you multiple chances to win.

Although it might seem complicated for novices, it is in fact quite an easy bet to understand. See the table below.

How Many Combinations Does an Canadian Bet Have?

In the table below you can see how many combinations in total the Canadian bet has.

Doubles10
Trebles10
Fourfolds5
Fivefolds1
Sixfolds0
Sevenfolds0
Eightfolds0
Ninefolds0
Tenfolds0

Understanding the various multiple bet types is important with any type of bet, but even more so with the Canadian bet. You can use this bet very strategically.

As an example, if you are a novice punter, you might want to go for an each-way Canadian bet and focus on horses that are bigger prices. This means that it is a good idea if your selections are priced at odds of 5/1 of bigger. EW Canadian bets are a more fun bet and give you an interest in five separate races.

It is important to note that you will need at least two of your selections to be successful to get a return with this bet.

How Does a Canadian Bet Work

Firstly you will want to select your horses, so let’s look at five mythical selections below which are priced at 5/1 or higher, and for this example, we’ll use a £0.50p each way stake, so your total outlay is £26.

  • Selection A – 5/1
  • Selection B – 6/1
  • Selection C – 8/1
  • Selection D – 10/1
  • Selection E – 10/1

So our total stake is £26, and of course, we want to win if possible, but also eliminate as much downside as possible. So how many winners or places will we need to break even or make a profit?

Let’s take our two biggest-priced selections and say they have both won. So it means we have a 10/1 winner and a 10/1 winner.

This gives us a win double which would return £60.50 for a profit of £34.50 on the money we laid out for our bet.

But our bet is an each-way bet and we don’t really need the horses to win. We just need them to be in the frame. So let’s say our three biggest prices (10/1, 10/1 & 8/1) all got placed, this would mean we have 3 doubles and 1 treble.

  • 8/1 place and a 10/1 place for a £0.50 stake gives us a return of £3.90
  • 8/1 place and a 10/1 place for a £0.50 stake gives us a return of £3.90
  • 10/1 place and a 10/1 place for a £0.50 stake gives us a return of £4.50
  • 8/1, 10/1 and 10/1 places give us an each-way treble for a return of £11.70

It means our three places have returned £24, which means a £2 loss on the money we have laid out for our bet.

And if you are wondering how much the return would be if we had all five horses placed, then the total return would be £269.58 for an outlay of £26.

I am a total sports fan, in particular horse racing, football and golf, and have been writing about these and other sports for a number of years. I have had the chance to attend many of the biggest horse racing events in my time and my sporting claim to fame has to be winning the inaugural RacingTV Tipstar contest back in 2014. When not watching or writing about sports and sports betting I like to take an interest in cryptocurrency, and last but not least spending time and playing with my two young grandchildren.
