On this page, we’ll explain how the 4 different combinations work for the Trixie bet. View our other bet types guides and how they work.

All of the info will be explained with tables and screenshots to help guide you along the way.

How Much Does a £0.20P Trixie Bet Cost?

Depending on how much you wish to spend in total will decide how much a Trixie will cost and the amount you can place on a staking level. You can do these bets for small stakes. But with only 4 bets in a Trixie, they are a good bet for placing larger stakes of £5 or higher. Remember, you should only bet amounts you can comfortably afford to lose.

Check out the table below, which shows you how much it costs for a twenty-pence Trixie.

TRIXIE BET STAKETOTAL COST
£0.10p Win£0.40
£0.10p Each Way£0.80
£0.20p Win£0.80
£0.20p Each Way£1.60
£0.25p Win£1.00

£0.50p Win£2.00

£1.00p Win£4.00
£1.00 Each Way£8.00
£5.00p Win£20.00
£5.00 Each Way£40.00

The Trixie is a simple bet that contains just 3 selections.

Your three selections will give you four different bets which are explained in the table below.

How Many Combinations Does a Trixie Bet Have?

Understanding combination bets is important, as you can use this bet as a strategy to back either favourites or outsiders (longshots)

Let’s look at how this bet might work using both of those scenarios.

Scenario 1 – Win Trixie

  • Selection A – 6/4
  • Selection B – 2/1
  • Selection C – 5/2

This bet has four combinations, with three doubles and one treble. So we have the three doubles (A&B, A&C & B&C) plus the one treble (A, B & C)

So let’s use £1 stakes for our bet, which means our total outlay is £4 and let’s assume each of our three horses has won.

  • Double A&B – Selection A @ 6/4 for £1 gives us £2.50 going onto selection B at 2/1 which gives us a return of £7.50 for our first double
  • Double A&C – Selection A @ 6/4 for £1 gives us £2.50 going onto selection C at 5/2 which gives us a return of £8.75 for our second double
  • Double B&C – Selection B @2/1 for £1 gives us £3.00 going onto selection C at 5/2 which gives us a return of £10.50 for our third double
  • Treble A&B&C – Selection A @ 6/4 for £1 gives us £2.50 going onto selection B at 2/1 which gives £7.50 going onto selection C at 5/2 which gives us a return of £26.25

Therefore our total return for our bet on the favourites will be £53 for a total outlay of £4

Scenario 2 – EW Trixie

  • Selection 1 – 5/1 (Place odds are 1/5th so 1/1)
  • Selection 2 – 10/1(Place odds are 1/5th so 2/1)
  • Selection 3 – 20/1(Place odds are 1/5th so 4/1)

This bet has four combinations, with three doubles and one treble. So we have the three doubles (1&2, 1&3 & 2&3) plus the one treble (1&2&3)

So let’s use £1 stakes for our bet, which means our total outlay is £8, and let’s assume each of our three horses has placed. When betting each way as we are with this bet the standard place terms are 1/5th of the win odds for a place.

  • Double 1&2 – Selection 1 @ 1/1 for £1 gives us £2.00 going onto selection 2 at 2/1 which gives us a return of £6.00 for our first double.
  • Double 1&3 – Selection 1 @ 1/1 for £1 gives us £2.00 going onto selection 3 at 4/1 which gives us a return of £10.00 for our second double.
  • Double 2&3 – Selection 2 @2/1 for £1 gives us £3.00 going onto selection 3 at 4/1 which gives us a return of £15.00 for our third double.
  • Treble 1&2&3 – Selection 1 @ 1/1 for £1 gives us £2.00 going onto selection 2 at 2/1 which gives £6.00 going onto selection 3 at 4/1 which gives us a return of £30.00.

Of course, if all three of your horses win with the longshot Trixie then you are in for a decent payout. The above bet with all three horses placed would give us a return of £61.00 for our £8 stake.

If the above three horses had won then your returns would be £1870 for a profit of £1862.

Of course, with a Trixie, you do need at least two of the three selections to win or be placed depending on if you do a win or each way bet.

I must say, this bet is great for both new and advanced horse racing bettors, and hopefully this simple explanation has helped you understand why this bet is one you might want to try out.
