STAKING Plan FOR HORSE RACING BETTING COMBINATIONS BET TYPES

The above horse racing betting combinations we have shown are what would normally be classed as basic bets for horse racing bettors but sometimes, punters do not take into account betting strategy. If you are a novice bettor then these types of bets are great for a fun involvement in the sport or if you are going for a day at the races.

Above we showed these as an example if you were betting these as a £1 stake, but for novice bettors and people who are just having a fun day out then you can do these bets for as little as £0.10p stakes. See the chart below which shows how much your bet would cost based on stakes of £0.10, £0.25 and £0.50.

BET TYPE£0.10p WIN£0.10p EW£0.25p WIN£0.25p EW£0.50p WIN£0.50p EW
Patent£0.70£1.40£1.75£3.50£3.50£7.00
Yankee£1.10£2.20£2.75£5.50£5.50£11.00
Lucky 15£1.50£3.00£3.75£7.50£7.50£15.00
Canadian£2.60£5.20£6.50£13.00£13.00£26.00
Lucky 31£3.10£6.20£7.75£15.50£15.50£31.00
Heinz£5.70£11.40£14.25£28.50£28.50£57.00
Lucky 63£6.30£12.60£15.75£31.50£31.50£63.00

As you can see above, you do not need to spend big on the various horse racing betting combinations. These can be viewed as fun bets.

STRATEGY FOR horse racing betting Combos

So we have shown you the different bets and how much these cost for various stakes, but let’s look at some basic strategies when using these bets.

Win Combination Bets

For the win bets then it makes sense to go for horses which are shorter in the betting as these are of course the favourites. A 2/1 chance clearly has a better chance of winning the race than a 20/1 chance.

So using our example above of a Yankee and using the stake of £0.25p. Let’s say you pick out four horses.

  • Horse 1 – Ontheballbets 1/1
  • Horse 2 – Balls Bets 2/1
  • Horse 3 – On The Ball 3/1
  • Horse 4 – Lucky Ball 4/1

So as we know, a £0.25p win Yankee will cost you £2.75, but if all these four horses were to win then your returns would be £86.25.

It is important to note that you need at least two horses to win if you are doing a win Yankee, so as an example, If Ontheballbets and Ball Bets both won, that would give you a double, and your returns would be £1.50.

EW (Each Way) Combination Bets

For the each-way bets then it makes sense to go for horses which are bigger in the betting as these are of course the outsiders. For each-way bets you want to be betting on horses that are ideally 5/1 or bigger.

Personally, I like combination bets at the bigger meetings where you get horses at bigger prices.

So using our example above of a Yankee and using the stake of £0.25p EW (Each-Way). Let’s say you pick out four horses.

  • Horse 1 – Ontheballbets 5/1
  • Horse 2 – Balls Bets 10/1
  • Horse 3 – On The Ball 20/1
  • Horse 4 – Lucky Ball 20/1

So as we know, a £0.25p each way Yankee will cost you £5.50, but if all these four horses were to be placed (not win) then your returns would be £104.00 if they all got placed. If they were all to win then your returns would be £10,253, a hefty amount.

Now your chances of hitting this type of win is of course limited but it can be done and that is why these horse racing betting combinations are great as fun bets, especially for novice bettors

It is important to note that you need at least two horses to be placed if you are doing an each-way Yankee, so as an example, If Ontheballbets and Ball Bets both placed, that would give you a place double, and your returns would be £1.50.

FAQ

Can I win lottery-sized winnings with this type of bet?

The simple answer is NO, but you can win up to £1,000,000 on this type of bet. All bookmakers have the maximum amount you can win on these bets stipulated in their terms and conditions. The bigger reputable bookmakers will usually have limits between £250,000 to £1,000,000 for these types of bets

Can I place these bets on my mobile phone?

Yes, it is now easy to place bets on your mobile phone with most bookmakers. The top bookmakers all have easy-to-use mobile apps. Our favourites are Bet365, Betfred, William Hill and Boylesports.

Are these a good bet for beginners?

Yes, combination bets are great bets for beginners for two main reasons. 1. You can bet with small stakes for the chance of a sizeable return. 2. If you are going horse racing then a bet like a Lucky 63, which has six selections means you can pick a horse in every race and have an interest throughout the day. Even one winner or one place will give you a return.

Are betting and gambling addictive?

The answer to this is that it can be, which is why you should only bet what you can afford to lose. If you are planning to bet online or at the racetrack then give yourself a set amount of money. All reputable online bookmakers now have tools that you can use to put deposit limits in place.

If you feel you, or somebody you know has a problem with gambling then there are support groups and mechanisms in place to help, including Gamblers Anonymous, Gamstop and The National Gambling Helpline

I am a total sports fan, in particular horse racing, football and golf, and have been writing about these and other sports for a number of years. I have had the chance to attend many of the biggest horse racing events in my time and my sporting claim to fame has to be winning the inaugural RacingTV Tipstar contest back in 2014.
