Presidents Cup – Bookmaker Sign Up and Bonus Offers
The Presidents Cup really is one of the toughest team events in golf where the USA take on an elite team made up of players from the Rest Of The World.
This year’s renewal will be taking place at the Quail Hollow Club from the 20th – 25th of September 2022.
Quail Hollow is based in Charlotte in North Carolina, a massive golfing state. The course for this year’s event is one of the most stunning parkland-style courses in the world and features numerous bunkers and water features. The greens provide ample opportunity for tough pin positions and we are sure to see plenty of excitement with par threes needing a laser-guided approach over numerous water hazards.
Again the golf bettor can be smart here and look at players who have an excellent record going tee to green.
At the time of writing, we have no player specials listed but the match itself sees the US Team as strong favourites at 1/3 with The Internationals priced up at 7/2.
That looks a very big price with recent Open Champion Cameron Smith sure to be gunning for the US. He is backed up by the world-class Japanese player Hideki Matsuyama, so it will be interesting to see how this pans out.
Don’t worry, we have you covered. Make sure to read on for all the important player’s stats and data. Make sure to check out all the Presidents Cup golf best odds before placing your bets on the event.
THE TEAM CAPTAINS
The two captains, Davis Love III and Trevor Immelman, both are winners of numerous golf tournaments and will be treating this just as they would if they were battling themselves out on the fairways.
DAVIS LOVE III
Davis Love needs no introduction to golf fans and having captained the US team in the 2012 and 2016 Ryder Cups, he has the perfect blend of skill and experience to use the talent at his disposal to try and retain the cup for the United States.
Love himself was a 21-time winner on the PGA tour, and a stat you might not know about him is that he stayed in the top ten of golfs world rankings for 450 consecutive weeks, an amazing achievement.
Love only won a single major during his career but is loved (no pun intended) by US golf fans and he’ll be desperate to win this on home soil.
TREVOR IMMELMAN
Immelman hails from South Africa, a country that has produced some marvellous golfers over the years and, he also is a one-time major winner, capturing the coveted green jacket in 2008 when winning The Masters.
Immelman has won eleven tournaments in his career including 2 PGA tour titles and 4 European Tour Titles.
Much younger than Love III, Immelmans golfing claim to fame was probably in 2004, when he became the first man to successfully defend the South African Open title since that legend of golf, Gary Player, achieved the same feat during the 1970s.
Immelman represented the International team at the 2005 Presidents Cup when on the losing side. He has no experience as a captain in team golf so this will be a huge challenge facing up to the experienced Love III on away territory.
WHO WILL BE PLAYING PRESIDENTS CUP GOLF IN 2022?
The teams for the event will be finalised nearer to the event but we wanted to do a rundown of how the teams are selected and pick out five players from each team that will be potential stars during the event.
USA
The way in which the team is chosen is not a straightforward choice based on world rankings and the format for choosing the USA team is quite complex.
There are six players that are decided on a points basis and another six are selections made by the captain.
Points are gathed by players based on performance in a series of events as per the list below.
- 2019 A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier through 2020 BMW Championship – 1 FedExCup point = 0.5 point
- 2020 Fortinet Championship through 2021 BMW Championship – 1 FedExCup point = 1 points
- 2021 Fortinet Championship through 2022 BMW Championship – 1 FedExCup point = 3 points
So as you can see, points are accumulated over a three-year period.
At the time of writing (24th August 2022) the top 10 players vying for one of the six automatic spots are listed in the table below.
Player | Ponts |
---|---|
SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER | 13,180 |
PATRICK CANTLAY | 11,068 |
XANDER SCHAUFFELE | 9,340 |
SAM BURNS | 9,130 |
JUSTIN THOMAS | 8,718 |
TONY FINAU | 8,575 |
WILL ZALATORIS | 7,986 |
JORDAN SPIETH | 7,214 |
COLLIN MORIKAWA | 6,727 |
MAX HOMA | 6,539 |
So they are in the top 10 in the official Presidents Cup Standings but’s take a look at 5 players who are sure to play a big part and their current form and stats.
SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER
Scheffler needs no real introduction and is currently leading both the FedEx Cup rankings and the official world golf rankings. This year’s Masters winner will be a key part of the USA Presidents Cup team and will no doubt be looking to put in a strong performance in the PGA Tour Championship before representing his country in the team event.
Player Stats
- Scheffler is ranked 19th in driving distance with an average of 311.5 yards off the tee
- In terms of accuracy from the fairway, Scheffler ranks at the top of the pile for GIR (Greens In Regulation) at 72.57%
- In terms of birdies per round, Scheffler has an average of 4.65 per round placing him second for that stat.
- A weakness for Scheffler is in the eagle department where he is only ranked 94th
- His scoring average of 69.27 places him in the 4th spot.
With four tournament victories this year (Up to 24th August 2022) it is no wonder he will be a vital component of Davis Love’s team.
XANDER SCHAUFFELE
Schauffele is one of the most consistent players on the PGA Tour and has been building a solid CV in terms of his top 10 finishes both in the US and abroad. The 28-year-old from La Jolla in California has really improved his game over the last two years and is now clearly one of the best golfers in the world having posted Top 15 finishes in each of the last three major championships as we write this in August 2022.
Player Stats
- Schauffele is ranked 27th in driving distance with an average of 309.4 yards off the tee
- In terms of accuracy from the fairway, Schauffele ranks 11th for GIR (Greens In Regulation) at 70.26%
- In the birdies department, he has an average of 4.32 per round placing him nicely in the top ten at the ninth spot.
- Schauffele’s main weakness is driving accuracy where he has just a 61.45% success rate and rates 80th in that stat.
- His scoring average of 69.48 is strong and places him in the 6th spot.
JUSTIN THOMAS
Justin Thomas has been one of the US’s most improved players over the last 2 years and is regularly in the Top 10 as proven by nine Top 10 finishes during the 2021/2022 season, and to add to that he was also the winner of the PGA Championship. Thomas has now secured 15 tour victories and is another that Captain Love III will be expecting great things of him in Carolina.
Player Stats
- Thomas is ranked 14th in driving distance with an average of 314.4 yards off the tee
- In terms of accuracy from the fairway, Thomas ranks only 35th for GIR (Greens In Regulation) at 68.36%
- However, he is one of the best putters with a birdie average of 4.53 per 18 holes, placing him in the third spot.
- Thomas’s main weakness is driving accuracy where he has just a 54.46% success rate and rates 172nd in that stat.
- His scoring average of 69.54 is strong and places him in the 7th spot.
TONY FINAU
Tony Finau has been on the fringes of the best in the world for some time but has until recently not been able to convert that talent into wins. That has changed over the last couple of months with victories in the Rocket Mortgage Classic and 3M Open, plus a runner-up spot in the RBC Canadian Open. He is currently on fire and a solid showing at the Tour Championship should see him in the automatic six for The Presidents Cup.
Player Stats
- Finau is ranked 42nd in driving distance with an average of 307.7 yards off the tee
- In terms of accuracy from the fairway, Finau ranks very high at 5th for GIR (Greens In Regulation) at 71.14%
- His solid putting gives him a birdie average of 4.23 per round placing him 11th for that statistic.
- Finau’s main weakness is driving accuracy where he has just a 57.91%, and like Thomas, could improve this part of his game.
- His solid profile, and scoring tee to green, puts him in the 7th spot, which has led to those recent wins.
JORDAN SPIETH
Speith took the world by storm when he blasted onto the golfing world, but it has been a rougher ride over the last few years. However, the 29-year-old from Dallas Texas has been gradually coming right back to form and although he is not an automatic choice sitting eighth in the standings at the time of writing, Davis Love is sure to pick him as one of his six wildcards. The Dallas man is a real gutsy performer and his recent performance when 8th at The Open Championship shows he has to be feared.
Player Stats
- Spieth is ranked 36th in driving distance with an average of 308.8 yards off the tee
- In terms of accuracy from the fairway, Spieth ranks only 35th for GIR (Greens In Regulation) at 68.36%
- However, he is still one of the best putters on his day and with a birdie average of 4.04, he still can mix it with the best.
- Speith’s main weakness is his accuracy from the fairway where he has just a 66.9% success rate and rates just 76th in that stat.
- His scoring average of 70.27 places him in the 32nd position in that category.
THE INTERNATIONALS
The International team picks are based on a totally different method with eight players qualifying based on results and the final four being the wild card picks of captain Trevor Immelman (note that the captain’s picks will be made on 6th September 2022)
Qualification for the international teams runs between the 2021 Open Championship to the 2022 BMW Championship.
The International Team Points System operates in a similar way to the current OWGR (Official World Golf Ranking) system. In addition to the points awarded as per the above example, Major Championship winners will receive an additional 100 points and PLAYERS Championship winners will receive an additional 80 points.
As well as the above, any International Team Points earned from the 2022 PGA Championship through the 2022 BMW Championship will be increased by 25%.
At the time of writing (24th August 2022) the top 8 players in the qualifying spots for the International Team are listed in the table below.
Player | Points |
---|---|
CAMERON SMITH | 17.90 |
HIDEKI MATSUYAMA | 7.99 |
SUNGJAE IM | 7.59 |
JOAQUIN NIEMANN | 6.42 |
JOOHYUNG KIM | 4.99 |
COREY CONNERS | 4.98 |
ADAM SCOTT | 4.97 |
MITO PEREIRA | 4.19 |
So they are the top 8 in the official Presidents Cup Standings but let’s take a look at 5 players who are sure to play a big part for Trevor Immelman’s “Internationals” based on form and stats.
CAMERON SMITH
The Australian has certainly taken the golfing world by storm, culminating in his recent win in the Open Golf Championship at St Andrews. He has won three tournaments this year including The Players Championship and The Sentry Tournament of Champions. At the time of writing Smith was ranked 6th in the FedEx Cup standings and 2nd in the OWGR list.
Player Stats
- Smith is ranked 98th in driving distance with an average of 300.1 yards off the tee
- In terms of accuracy from the fairway, Smith ranks only 46th for GIR (Greens In Regulation) at 68.10%
- In terms of birdies per round, Smith has an average of 4.69 per round placing him first for that stat.
- A weakness for Smith is in the driving department where he is weak from an accuracy and distance perspective.
- His scoring average of 69.09 places him in the 2nd spot.
With three tournament victories this year (Up to 24th August 2022) it is no wonder he will be the number one for Trevor Immelman’s side and his lethal putting will be needed to give the Internationals a shot at victory.
HIDEKI MATSUYAMA
The Japanese player has been near the top of the game for a number of years now. Renowned as a tough and fierce competitor, he does not know when he is beat, and can grind opponents into submission with his solid putting play. He posted a great fourth-place finish in the US Open back in June but has been out of form since then so it will be interesting to see if he can get back on song during the Tour Championship at the end of August.
Player Stats
- Matsuyama is ranked 61st in driving distance with an average of 305.3 yards off the tee
- In terms of accuracy from the fairway, Matsuyama ranks 34th for GIR (Greens In Regulation) at 68.38%
- In the birdies rankings, he has an average of 4.15 per round placing him just inside the top 15 at the fourteenth spot.
- Matsuyama’s main weakness is driving accuracy where he has just a 59.81% success rate and rates 105th in that stat.
- His scoring average of 70.16 is solid and places 27th in that division.
JOAQUIN NIEMANN
The 23-year-old Chilean only turned pro in 2018 so is still a relatively unexposed talent. He won the Genesis Invitational to record just his second career victory back in February and since then has recorded two other top ten finishes including in the recent BMW Championship where he finished 8th with solid rounds of 69-68-68-70. Will come here in form and looks sure to play a big part for The Internationals.
Player Stats
- Niemann is one of the longer drivers on tour, ranked 26th in driving distance with an average of 309.5 yards off the tee
- In terms of accuracy from the fairway, Niemann ranks only 52nd for GIR (Greens In Regulation) at 67.84%
- He is a solid enough putter with a birdie average of 4.14 per round, placing him 16th on that list.
- Niemann’s main weakness is driving accuracy where he has just a 56.03% success rate which places him only 153rd.
- His scoring average of 69.85 is strong and places him in the 17th spot and shows putting is clearly his strong point.
SUNGJAE IM
The Korean superstar turned pro at the very young age of 17 and the 24-year-old has certainly made a big impression on the game in Asia. His recent form has been outstanding with two top fifteen finishes following on from a couple of tied for second spot finishes at the 3M Open and The Wyndham Championship. He will form a powerful part of Trevor Immelman’s team and we can expect big things from him in The Presidents Cup.
Player Stats
- Sungjae Im is ranked 68th in driving distance with an average of 304 yards off the tee.
- In terms of accuracy from the fairway, he ranks very high at 10th for GIR (Greens In Regulation) at 70.37%.
- Im’s main weakness seems to be his putting with a birdie average of 3.95 per round placing him just 38th.
- Off the tee, he ranks 29th for accuracy with a 65.40% score.
- His solid overall profile sees a scoring average of 69.84% which places him in nicely in the Top 20 at the 16th spot.
ADAM SCOTT
The Australian has been around for years and continues to perform at the very highest level of golf. For sure, his experience will be vital for captain Trevor Immelman to call upon. Now a veteran in modern-day terms at 42 years old, Scott continues to pull out top-class form as proven by his Top 15 finishes in The US Open and The Open Championship. He is also bang in form at the time of writing, with consecutive 5th place finishes in the FedEx St Jude Championship and the BMW Championship.
Player Stats
- Scott is currently ranked 15th in driving distance with an average of 313.3 yards off the tee
- In terms of accuracy from the fairway, he ranks only 59th for GIR (Greens In Regulation) at 67.48%
- However, he is still one of the best putters on his day, even though his current 4.03 birdies per round average is not the best we have seen from him.
- Scott’s main weakness is his driving accuracy where he has just a 55.44% success rate and languishes in the 163rd spot at the time of writing.
- His scoring average of 70.27 places him in the 32nd position in that category.
PAST PRESIDENTS CUP PERFORMANCES
The Presidents Cup is played once every two years and the inaugural tournament was played in 1994 at the State of Virginia at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club.
In that time there have been 13 editions of the event with the score standing at 11 for The USA and 1 for The Internationals with the other event ending in a memorable 17-17 draw as the US Team led by Jack Nicklaus and the International Team led by Gary Player on his home soil in South Africa served up a tournament that will never be forgotten as Republic of South Africa President Thabo Mbeki served as the Honorary Chairman.
PRESIDENTS CUP SCORES
Year | Winner | Runner-Up | Score |
---|---|---|---|
2022 | ? | ? | ? |
2019 | USA | The Internationals | 16-14 |
2017 | USA | The Internationals | 19-11 |

1996 | USA | The Internationals | 16.5-15.5 |
1994 | USA | The Internationals | 20-12 |
With the power of the US teams over the years, we can see how tough it is for the Internationals to make an impact, however, this year could be where they register that elusive second victory now having some truly world-class golfers to call upon.
PRESIDENTS CUP MATCH FORMAT
There are 34 points up for grabs in the Presidents Cup and this takes on a format using some of the most popular mixed match types in the game of golf.
The tournament is made up of a combination of foursomes and four-balls which are then followed on the final day with a round of 12 singles matches to decide the outcome.
FOURSOMES
Foursomes (sometimes referred to as alternate shots) is a form of play involving partners (in either match play or stroke play) where two partners compete as a side by playing one ball in alternating order on each hole.
FOUR-BALLS
Four-ball is a form of play (in either match play or stroke play) involving partners where two partners compete together as a side, with each player playing his or her own ball, and a side’s score for a hole is the lower score of the two partners on that hole.
SINGLES – MATCHPLAY FORMAT
Match play is a form of play where a player (or players) plays directly against an opponent (or opponents) in a head-to-head match. You win a hole by completing it in the fewest number of strokes, it’s that simple.
Matchplay is one of the most demanding games mentally as it is based on holes won and not strokes. You might shoot a higher overall score than your playing partner but can still win.
You win a match when you are winning by more holes than remain to be played. You (or your opponent) may concede a stroke, a hole, or even the match to each other.
PLAYER PERFORMANCE STATS
In this section, we are going to take a look at some of the key player stats for players from both teams and see which players are stronger in which areas of the game. Hopefully, this analysis will help you to pick out some interesting and profitable bets on The Presidents Cup.

How to bet on Golf – Different types of golf betting markets
As the game has evolved, so have the opportunities for golf bettors
Lowest First Round Score
A lot of bookmakers like to offer golf specials, specifically on the first round, as it is this round that is usually the most unpredictable.
A slightly different type of golf betting. Many bookmakers will offer this type of bet and it can come in two forms.
The first one is a simple OVER/UNDER market where bookmakers might offer a price like:
UNDER 68 1/2
OVER 68 6/4
Or maybe we might see a range offered like an example below:
Under 60 12/1
61-63 7/1
64 – 66 4/1
67 – 69 4/5
70 – 71 6/1
72 and over 100/1
Certainly an interesting market for golf punters and something to watch throughout the day.
It’s always possible we’ll see a really low score on Day 1 of a tournament and “dutching” two scoring ranges may be a great way to go.
First Round Leader
This is a very popular market for golf bettors and is just a straight choice on who you believe will be leading after the first round of golf is completed. However, it’s really important to bet tactically here. The first tee-offs in the early rounds of the championship[ are often before 7 am.
This can be a great time to play as weather conditions can be much calmer. Winds may be much lighter first thing in the morning compared to mid-morning or early afternoon. This also applies to later tee-offs which may also encounter calmer conditions for playing later in the day.
Sometimes you can find real value in this market and usually, you’ll see prices of 14/1 the field or even bigger.
Tournament Winner
The most common betting market for golf punters to bet on and as many bookmakers like to pay 10 or more places like Bet365, Betfred, William Hill, Betfair, and others, there is sure to be plenty of value prices available.
Even at the top of the market, you’ll find the favourite is often priced up at around 12/1 to 14/1, the price available on current favourite Scottie Scheffler.
Three Ball Accas
A bet for the pro golf punter, the 3-ball Acca offers punters the chance to string together some of their favourite players in a higher-paying Acca.
The early rounds of The US Open are a great opportunity to place trebles and accas. Again you need to bet strategically here.
Many times you’ll find a three-ball that may contain an amateur or old pro who can more often than not be discounted leaving only two serious options of who can win the three-ball. This automatically gives you a betting edge and allows you to find value and put them together in an Acca that can pay good odds.
Let’s look at an example:
If we chose four players at 4/5, EVS, 6/4, and 2/1 then for a £1 stake we’d get a return of £27 so a 26/1 Acca.
Studying the historical first-round scores of players can tell you if they are generally fast starters at a tournament.
CONCLUSION
The Presidents Cup has been dominated by the US but we have seen some tight finishes as well. This really looks the year when the International team could secure their second victory.
- Every Presidents Cup has an Honorary Chairman and that will be either the sitting president of the United States or the president or prime minister of the country hosting the event.
- The United States team won eleven of the thirteen matches played, with one draw and one win for the International team which came in 1998.
- The biggest winning margin in the event was in the year 2000 when the United States won by 21 1/2 points to 10 1/2 points.
- The most serving captain for the US was the legend of golf Jack Nicklaus, who captained the team in 1998, 2000, 2003 and 2005. The most decorated International captains were Peter Thompson who led the international team in 1996, 1998 (winners) and 2000, and the legendary Gary Player who led the team in 2003, 2005, and 2007
- Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods are the most decorated players in the US team history. Woods holds the record for the most singles points with 7.
This year looks sure to be a fantastic match and it will be interesting to see which player comes out on top in the individual points scoring with Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Smith, Xander Schauffele and Sungjai Im the ones to keep an eye on for betting purposes.
