Placing a placepot is different to most bets on William Hill, as the bet is outsourced to The Tote. For this reason, the betslip format is slightly different than your usual William Hill betslip. In addition to this, you won’t find the bet option in your standard horse racing page. You must find the Tote page, which is located in the drop-down menu of the Horse Racing section, which sits at the top of your menu once selected.

What Is A Placepot Bet?

A placepot bet is a type of horse racing bet run by The Tote. These bets are sent by William Hill to a separate organisation called The Tote. The placepot bet is a, six race bet, on the first six races for that race meeting and betting that each horse selected will ‘place’ either first or second in their race.

In its simplest form, you bet on one horse per race, but you can increase the number of horses per race if you’re prepared to pay a larger stake. The stake is per line and increases in multiples as you increase the number of horses and races that have multiple horses selected.

If you have one horse selected in each race you will pay only one stake. Add one more horse and you will pay for two stakes.  But if you have two horses selected in 3 races you will have to pay a stake on 8 lines, and two horses on 4 races you will pay for 16 lines and so on. The number of lines also increases with the number of horses you choose per race, as well as the number of races with multiple horses.

This type of bet has quite long odds and pays out well. It’s also a great one for keeping you on the edge of your seat for a few hours through all of the action.

What Is The Tote?

The Tote used to be a government organisation and would set up betting pools for each bet selection. The Tote would pay out winners not based on raw odds but on criteria of factors, such as total number of bettors on that horse, total pool, odds of that horse winning, and more.
