This layout has been used for major competitions since the Primrose Course was built. For the 2022 US Open, the Championship Course will be altered from the course used in prior championships, with the par 4 4th hole of the main course removed and the par 3 12th hole of the main course added, resulting in a 7,312 yard par 70 layout. Still, a very stiff challenge, as are all US Open layouts.

CAN JON RAHM DO IT AGAIN
Last year saw Rahm (16/1) win a close tournament with a final score of six-under-par (-6). He prevailed by just one shot over the South Africa Louis Oosthuizen
This year Rahm has not played as well as we know he can, as we can see by his two finishes in the first two majors of the year. He finished in a tie for 27th at The Masters and then a tie for 48th in The PGA.
In between those two tournaments, he was a winner of the Mexico Open at Vidanta but that was against a much weaker field. He looks to have taken some time out to prepare for a defense of his title, but at 14/1, is he too short in the market?
The last player to win consecutive US Opens was Brooks Koepka in 2017 and 2018 and he nearly pulled off the incredible when finishing runner up in 2019 also.
Curtis Strange achieved the same feat in 1988 and 1989 and interestingly the first of those was the last time the tournament was played at this year’s venue, The Country Club, Brookline, Massachusetts.
At the time of writing, Rahm was still topping the leaderboard in “greens in regulation” with a strike rate of 72.75% and that will be a potent weapon on this course.
His putting this season has been poor and on the slick US Open greens, he will need to up his game. If he can get the wand working then he is sure to be there or thereabouts come Sunday.
PAST US OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP PERFORMANCES – HOW IMPORTANT ARE THEY?
Players who have performed well at The US Open in the past tend to play well in subsequent tournaments. The courses are always set up to penalise poor approach play.
Some of the players who have performed well recently of course include Koepka, but others to take note of include:
Xander Schauffele 20/1
One player who is well worth a look in the betting is Schauffele who in the last five US Open Championships played has finished 7th, 5th T3rd, T6th, and 5th. That is some record for a single major and he comes into this in top form.
He tied for 13th at the recent US PGA and is sure to be a strong EW fancy here.
Daniel Berger 50/1
Daniel Berger tied for 7th in last year’s tournament and was also in the top 10 when finishing tied for 6th in 2018. It is these types of performers we need to look at who have shown consistency in the same event.
In terms of form, he started the year off well with a fourth spot at the Honda Classic before another good score to finish tied for 13th at the Players Championship. He missed the cut in the US PGA but put in two solid top 25 performances on either side of that and the US Open is sure to bring out the best. At 50/1 at the time of writing, Berger looks interesting EW value.
Brooks Koepka 50/1
We mentioned Koepka earlier and his US Open record stands under very close scrutiny.

In ten tournaments this year he has missed the cut in four of those but has also produced some great golf with Top 10’s in the Phoenix Open and The World Golf Championships and will surely be a contender in this year’s US Open.
PLAYER PERFORMANCE STATS FROM THE PGA TOUR
Driving Accuracy
At the time of writing Ryan Armour was heading the accuracy standings with The Big Dog and a percentage of 74.85% with 375 fairways hit from a possible 501 over 40 rounds. Whether Armour makes it to the US Open will depend on final qualifying.
Driving Distance
Cameron Champ (200/1) and Matthew Wolff (125/1) lead the way in this division with average driving distances of 326.1 yards and 320.7 yards respectively.
Both Champ and Wolff are lesser know names on the tour and although they are both big hitters, that is not necessarily a potent weapon at Brookline.
Players at the top of the market who also fair well in the long drive stats are Rory McIlroy (14/1) with an average of 320 yards and Jon Rahm (14/1) with an average distance of 318.7 yards
Greens In Regulation
Rahm leads the way here with a very strong 72.75% GIR. A figure that bodes very well given his immense power off the tee
However, Scottie Shefflers’s numbers can be viewed as even more impressive as he has a 71.63% GIR figure which has been achieved playing 21 rounds more than Rahm. This is also backed up by his run of top form which has taken him to number 1 in the world, including his win in this season’s Masters.
Average Putts Per Round
Brian Gay leads the way ahead of the veteran Matt Kuchar with an average of 27.38 putts per round on average but this important stat does not show in results and the 50-year-old has missed the cut in 7 of his last 10 events and is very unlikely to make a spot in the US Open.
However, Kuchar who has an average of 27.53 putts per round and recently finished a solid tied for 12th at the Byron Nelson Classic should make the line-up.
Stroke Average

Driving Accuracy
Collin Morikawa who sits fifth here with an average of 68.45% accuracy from the tee and the Englishman Jordan Smith who sits tenth with 64.49% accuracy are two players who could line-up at Brookline.
Smith will need a good result in the last qualifying event which is the Porsche European Open in early June.
Driving Distance
Bai Zheng-Kai leads the way here with a massive 335.50 yards average, although that has come from only six rounds. In the second spot is the Irishman Paul Dunne with an average driving distance of 332.79 but his stroke average of just 72.57 means he and Zheng Kai are unlikely to be lining up at Brookline.
However, one big driver on the DP World Tour who is sure to make the field is Rory McIlroy whose average on the DP World Tour is a steady 317.81 yards off the tee.
Greens In Regulation
Jordan Smith once again features here and he tops the leaderboard with a 76.46% average, and as we said, he needs a good week at the Porsche European Open to qualify for a spot in Brookline.
Other players to note here include Tommy Fleetwood who sits 6th hitting 71.77% GIR and Viktor Hovland who sits 21st in the standings but is having a tremendous season with a couple of strong performances in the first two majors as well as a win in Dubai.
Average Putts Per Round
There are some very strong stats here on The DP World Tour. At the time of writing, Gaganjeet Bhullar from India is leading the way with an average of 26.17 putts per round with Lucas Herbert from Australia in the second spot with an average of 26.75 putts per round.
To put this into context, Rory McIlroy has an average of just 28.67 putts per round on The DP World Tour.
Stroke Average
It’s interesting to see the top four spots in this section are taken by South Africans with Shaun Norris leading the way with a stroke average of 69.05 strokes per round. At the time of writing Norris was in the process of trying to qualify for Brookline, so it will be interesting to see if he makes the field.
US Open Championship Player Exemptions
Remember the famous film “Tin Cup” with Kevin Costner who played the driving range pro who so nearly won The US Open?
The US Open is a unique tournament in that anybody can enter at the qualifying stage as long as they have the required minimum handicap of 2.4 or lower.
It gives golfers of all ages the chance to take part in one of, if not the most difficult major golf tournament to win.
However, there are a number of exempt categories where players are given an entry based on current or past performance or by winning a certain tournament, which gives a “win and you’re in” entry

How to bet on Golf – Different types of golf betting markets
As the game has evolved, so have the opportunities for golf bettors
Lowest First Round Score
A lot of bookmakers like to offer golf specials, specifically on the first round, as it is this round that is usually the most unpredictable.
A slightly different type of golf betting. Many bookmakers will offer this type of bet and it can come in two forms.
The first one is a simple OVER/UNDER market where bookmakers might offer a price like:

Certainly an interesting market for golf punters and something to watch throughout the day.
It’s always possible we’ll see a really low score on Day 1 of a tournament and “dutching” two scoring ranges may be a great way to go.
First Round Leader
This is a very popular market for golf bettors and is just a straight choice on who you believe will be leading after the first round of golf is completed. However, it’s really important to bet tactically here. The first tee-offs in the early rounds of the championship[ are often before 7 am.
This can be a great time to play as weather conditions can be much calmer. Winds may be much lighter first thing in the morning compared to mid-morning or early afternoon. This also applies to later tee-offs which may also encounter calmer conditions for playing later in the day.
Sometimes you can find real value in this market and usually, you’ll see prices of 14/1 the field or even bigger.
Tournament Winner
The most common betting market for golf punters to bet on and as many bookmakers like to pay 10 or more places like Bet365, Betfred, William Hill, Betfair, and others, there is sure to be plenty of value prices available.
Even at the top of the market, you’ll find the favorite is often priced up at around 12/1 to 14/1, the price available on current favorite Scottie Scheffler.
Three Ball Accas
A bet for the pro golf punter, the 3 ball Acca offers punters the chance to string together some of their favorite players in a higher paying Acca.
The early rounds of The US Open are a great opportunity to place trebles and accas. Again you need to bet strategically here.
Many times you’ll find a three-ball that may contain an amateur or old pro who can more often than not be discounted leaving only two serious options of who can win the three-ball. This automatically gives you a betting edge and allows you to find value and put them together in an Acca that can pay good odds.
Let’s look at an example:
If we chose four players at 4/5, EVS, 6/4, and 2/1 then for a £1 stake we’d get a return of £27 so a 26/1 Acca.
Studying the historical first-round scores of players can tell you if they are generally fast starters at a tournament.
CONCLUSION
The US Open is nearly always a very tight golf tournament that does not produce high winning margins.
- 9 of the 15 years have seen the winning margin by two strokes or less.
- Brooks Koepka has won the tournament twice and finished in the top three twice in the last five years.
- The last time the tournament was played at Brookline, the winning score was -6 which is the same score of the last two winners.
- Louis Oosthuizen and Jason Day have both been runner up twice in the last 11 years
- Phil Mickelson has finished runner-up on five separate occasions.
This year looks sure to be a fantastic tournament with Scheffler (14/1), Smith (20/1), and McIlroy (11/1) all coming here in top form. Add in Dustin Johnson, Tiger, and Phil Mickelson and we have a tournament to savor.
Daniel Berger (50/1) , Matt Fitzpatrick (28/1) Louis Oosthuizen (66/1) and Xander Schauffele (20/1) are ones that you also need to keep an eye on for betting purposes.
